Landvik, Lorna Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons Ballantine Books 3-Feb-04 345442822 Paperback Five friends live through three decades of marriages, child raising, neighborhood parties, bad husbands and good brownies-and Landvik (Patty Jane's House of Curl) doesn't miss a single cliche as she chronicles their lives in this pleasant but wholly familiar novel of female bonding. When Faith Owens's husband is transferred from Texas to the stupid godforsaken frozen tundra of Freesia Court, Minn., in 1968, her life looks like it's going to be one dull, snowy slog-until the power goes out one evening and a group of what appear to be madwomen start a snowball fight in her backyard. These dervishes turn out to be her neighbors: antiwar activist Slip; sexpot Audrey; painfully shy Merit; and widow Kari. They become fast friends and decide to escape their humdrum routine by starting the Freesia Court Book Club, later given the eponymous name by one of their disgruntled husbands. As the years pass, Audrey and Merit get divorced, Kari adopts her niece's illegitimate baby, all five of the women find work outside their homes and they even smoke a joint together. Their personal dramas are regularly punctuated by reflections on political milestones (First Martin Luther King, Jr., then Bobby Kennedy. As if we didn't have enough to worry about with this stupid war...). While some scenes are touching and genuinely funny, readers of Fannie Flagg, Rita Mae Brown, Rebecca Wells and many imitators will feel that they've seen this before. Landvik, Lorna Patty Jane's House of Curl Ballantine Books 3-Sep-96 449911004 Paperback This debut novel's campy title promises good-natured gossip, women baring their souls and their gray roots to understanding hairdressers. Yet although Landvik builds her plot around two close-knit Minnesota sisters, Patty Jane and Harriet, she doesn't so much conjure a beauty shop as explain, in sentimental terms, how her kindhearted principals survive hardship. The story, which oscillates between optimism and tragedy, begins in 1953, at Patty Jane's wedding to handsome Norwegian Thor; that evening, the bride becomes pregnant, frightening her husband and eventually prompting his mysterious disappearance only days before their daughter is born. Meanwhile, Harriet falls in love with Avel, a doting millionaire. They're blissfully happy together, so when Avel goes on a business trip just before their scheduled nuptials, it's a sure bet his plane will crash. The ensuing years pass quickly as the sisters adjust to single life. Patty Jane opens the eponymous salon and raises her daughter, while Harriet, who never quite gets over Avel, develops a drinking problem. Both women will love again, but new troubles are in store. Landvik uses the latter half of the book to grandstand against alcohol and cigarettes; the characters praise AA, and one key player succumbs to lung cancer. Everyone finds consolation in the homespun wisdom that peppers every page (grief is a lot like sobriety; you get through it one day at a time). Family bonds?if not beauty-salon solidarity?triumph in this unpretentious tale. British rights to Little, Brown UK. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal In this upbeat novel about two sisters living in Minnesota between the 1950s and the 1980s, Patty Jane marries young, is abandoned by her husband, and lives with baby daughter Nora and mother-in-law Ione. Patty Jane's sister, Harriet, is engaged to a millionaire, who is killed in an airplane crash just before the wedding. When Patty Jane opens a beauty parlor called The House of Curl, it quickly becomes the locale of a women's support group. The women gossip, take a variety of classes at the beauty parlor, and console one another when needed. Harriet becomes an alcoholic and lives in the streets until she is saved by a policeman and falls in love again. Patty Jane falls in love with her male manicurist and is jolted when her missing husband reappears. This first novel by former stand-up comic Landvik portrays the vicissitudes of life, the bonding of women, and the ties of family. While sometimes predictable, it is always amusing and should appeal to a large audience. Stephanie Furtsch, New Rochelle P.L., N.Y. Landvik, Lorna Your Oasis on Flame Lake Ballantine Books 16-Jun-98 449002985 Paperback From Library Journal A varied cast of characters takes turns narrating this ultimately upbeat tale of friendship, tears, and laughter from the author of Patty Jane's House of Curl (LJ 8/95). Devera Lindstrom and BiDi Herrera, best friends since high school, are on the cusp of 40. While Devera has an affair with a pretentious college instructor, BiDi uses diet pills to keep her gorgeous body in shape and tries to hide her dissatisfaction with Franny, her athletic teenage daughter. Dick Lindstrom works for his father-in-law and dreams of opening a nightclub in his basement. BiDi's husband, Sergio, adores his hockey-playing stepdaughter but wants to have another child. Dick learns of Devera's affair, Franny is mysteriously beaten up one evening, and BiDi and Sergio's new baby is born prematurely. Yet in the end nearly everyone is happy and fulfilled. Close scrutiny reveals any number of weaknesses, including the overly busy, rather unbelievable plot; the pedestrian writing; and the less-than-three-dimensional characters. But why complain? Read it for what it is: a perfect purchase for popular fiction collections.?Nancy Pearl, Washington Ctr. for the Book, Seattle Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Many aficionados prefer to hear authors, not actors, recite their own work, being willing to endure performance flaws for the sake of getting it from the horse's mouth. No one need indulge novelists Lorna Landvik she is a fine reader indeed. In this selection, she's written about an ordinary, likeable person who learns through trial and error how to live life. The story has a gentle, bucolic atmosphere despite violent, shattering events. It also tastes of political correctness. As narrator, Landvik seems to lisp, but not consistently. It's only a slight irritation, Oasis is set in rural Minnesota, where the 30-some-things and their kids take turns giving eyewitness accounts of their adventures. and she excels at impersonating her characters.
