Jaffe, Michele Loverboy: A Novel New York Ballantine Books 1-Jun-04 345447417 N Paperback From AudioFile&newline;Imogen Page, an FBI agent who perceives patterns in serial killers via taste and smell, is on the track of Loverboy, a vicious serial killer who tortures his victims and then kills them. The collages he sends always have clues to where he is and what his victim will look like in death. But this case is different as Loverboy wants Imogen to find him. Liz Zazzi portrays Loverboy with a mind-numbing intonation that exudes the exactness and absolute control he holds over his victims, while Imogen is heard as patient and focused on all the details her senses can summon. It takes Zazzi a while to sound comfortable with Jaffe's sadistic character, the vivid descriptions of torture and mutilation, and the convoluted plot, but the emotional distance is all important if Imogen and the listener are to solve this mystery and rescue Loverboy's victim. The mingling of her senses makes her acutely aware of patterns and unusually empathic. That's why the bureau barely gives her time to recover from her brother's death before they haul her back on the case of serial killer Loverboy, who sends collages of his future crime scenes to the feds, taunting them to solve the puzzles before he kills again. He's on his fifth collage. His victim is the reputed paramour of automobile mogul Robert Benton, a take-charge executive who puts his vast resources at Imogen's disposal. She is well aware of what awaits the sadistic Loverboy's victim, and she methodically attempts to piece together the clues laid out in the collage before time runs out. Although the plot strains credulity and Imogen's special gift never lives up to its intriguing promise, this novel offers some fascinating secondary characters, plenty of sprightly sexual banter, a few really bad knock-knock jokes, and plot twists aplenty.
