3 Buckley Jr., William F. Spytime: The Undoing of James Jesus Angleton
Harvest Books 11-Jun-01 156011247 Paperback
This fictional account of the life of James Jesus Angleton, founder of the American counterintelligence establishment, will make readers wish for the humor and high jinks of Blackie Oakes, William F. Buckley Jr.'s much more engaging fictional spy. As the novel opens, Angleton is being summarily locked out of the halls of power and plotting his final act: the unmasking of the famed Fifth Man involved in the scandals that rocked England when Guy Burgess, Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, and Anthony Blount were unmasked as traitors. But before he lets the reader in on the identity of the Fifth Man, Buckley traces Angleton's career through his involvement in a number of espionage cases, all rooted in the cold war and apparently chosen to illustrate Buckley's ongoing (and already decided) battle with his favorite nemesis, Soviet communism. Angleton's lifelong obsession with Philby is the engine that drives Spytime, but there are too many miles on it to make what passes for a plot hold the reader's interest. On the brighter side, Buckley's erudition puts a fine polish on the chassis. Cold Warrior, Tom Mangold's fine biography of Angleton, is a more evenhanded treatment of the life of this complicated man, but Buckley's is more fun to take to the beach. --Jane Adams --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Library Journal Author of the best-selling Blackford Oakes series, Buckley here takes on the core of spying--recruiting, training, and deceit. Many former spies make cameo appearances in this profile of James Jesus Angleton, a real spymaster who ran the counterintelligence operations of the CIA for decades after World War II. The introduction of young agents gives Buckley a lot of room for sexy interludes, professorial expositions, and energetic episodes. Throughout the book, the intellectual appeal of espionage separates this from the usual cloak-and-dagger story. Sure to be a favorite, this novel successfully explores the enigmatic life of a Cold Warrior. For all popular fiction collections. ---Barbara Conaty, Library of Congress Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4 Buckley, William F The temptation of Wilfred Malachey
New York Workman Publishing 1985 894809237 N Hardcover
From Publishers Weekly&newline;Buckley has written his first book for young readers, an original and urbane fantasy listed under Goblin Tales, &doublequote;stories of the unexplained.&doublequote; The subdued colors in Gurney's pictures reflect the dark doings set afoot by Wilfred Malachey, a newcomer at Brookfield Academy. Wilfred's allowance is small, his parents sacrifice to send him to the boarding school, so he steals to pay for luxuries enjoyed by the well-heeled students. But the discovery of the goblin residing in Brookfield's computer leads Wilfred to visions of real wealth instead of petty thefts. The goblin, Omegagod, has granted fabulous wishes to a teacher whose secret the lad has overheard. Pretending he's the favored man, Wilfred asks Omegagod for a million dollars. The creature is not fooled, however, and he sets terms that terrify Wilfred even though he scales down his request considerably. There are surprises, tensions and glints of Buckley's acid wit aimed, expectedly, at his familiar targets: computer jargon (according to Wilfred's father) &doublequote;could be used to make sense out of a New York Times editorial.&doublequote; &newline;Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc. &newline;&newline; From School Library Journal&newline;Grade 4-6 Workman promises that the books in this new series are &doublequote;haunting stories for children.&doublequote; Well, if you believe that Bill Buckley is &doublequote;a celebrated fiction writer,&doublequote; then you may believe that his book is &doublequote;a haunting story.&doublequote; Otherwise, you'll find it to be only a barely-adequate cautionary fable. Wilfred Malachey, the poorest boy in his prep school, finds a way to communicate, via computer, with a peevish goblin who calls himself &doublequote;Omegagod.&doublequote; Wilfred, whose poverty has driven him to steal from his wealthy classmates, is scared back onto the straight and narrow when the computer god threatens to, as it were, pull the plug on his life program. Ho-hum. Michael Cart, Beverly Hills Public Library&newline;Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
